Summer 2013 Donald P. Sowell Internship Program
The Cincinnati Art Museum has a paid summer internship position for a select African American undergraduate, who will have completed their sophomore year by Summer 2013. All Summer 2013 Internships qualify for the program. To apply, please select for one of the positions below, following the general application instructions. In addition, please include a 500-word essay explaining your interest in the Donald P. Sowell Internship Program and one letter of recommendation.



Design & Dissemination
Position: Editorial Assistant
The selected intern will work with the Art Museum’s editorial manager and design team on projects ranging from exhibition materials to museum publications, including external collateral pieces (invitations, brochures, advertising). You’ll assist with proofreading, writing and communicating with project stakeholders. You’ll also take part in brainstorming sessions for upcoming programs and shows. Our project schedule is varied and fast-paced, and requires attention to detail and follow-up, good communication skills and flexibility. You’ll interact with staff in different areas within the Art Museum while working in our design team’s collaborative environment.

Requirements: Studying (or recent undergrad degree in) Journalism/Communications; English; Marketing. Should be proficient in Word and familiar with Mac systems. Proofreading and editing skills needed; familiarity with InDesign is a plus.
Please provide two writing samples.

Term: Summer 2013
Hours: 10 to 15 hours per week minimum; or 2 to 3 days per week. We can accommodate outside work or class schedules.

Design & Dissemination
Position: Graphic Design Intern
This position will assist in conceptual development related to various events and exhibitions, and arrive at creative solutions that fall within the Art Museum’s branding initiatives. The intern will be tasked with the design and production of various projects including print pieces (postcards, flyers, invitations) and gallery graphics (labels, wall graphics and signage). Other tasks may include but are not limited: to upkeep and maintenance of existing graphics and signage, organization and archiving of files, preparing files for print or presentation, and various other special projects as assigned.

Requirements: Candidates should have or be currently working toward a degree in Graphic Design or related field of study or have equivalent experience. A working knowledge of the Adobe Suite and the basics of print design and production is required. A high level of craft and attention to typography is also needed. You will be asked to work independently on projects as well as part of a team, juggle many projects in a timely manner while meeting deadlines and maintaining a flexible and creative approach to the work.

Curatorial Division
Position: European Art Internship
The Curator of European Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture is seeking a highly motivated individual to assist in the preparation of exhibitions, as well as conduct research on aspects of the permanent collection. The position will involve library research, mailings, photocopying, and filing. Knowledge of French, Italian, or German is desirable.

Requirements: Art History major; preference given to those pursuing a graduate degree in Art History. Preference given to candidates with knowledge of foreign languages.
Writing sample and 3 references required with application.

Photographic Services
Position: Photo Services Intern
Photo Services Department:  Intern position to assist with various projects including but not limited to fine art photography as well as scanning and processing digital images for public access and varying museum needs. Intern will gain a working knowledge of museum standards for photographing and cataloging images of fine arts, etc.

Requirements: Although, not required, candidate should be working toward or possess a fine art degree. Working knowledge of photography and PC and/or Mac computer skills and especially Adobe Photoshop a must.

Learning and Interpretation
Position: Interpretive Programming Intern
As part of the Division of Learning + Interpretation, the Interpretive Programming department is responsible for a wide range of on-site free-choice public programming at the Art Museum.  These include programs for both youth and adults such as lectures, gallery experiences, performances, art-making workshops, film screenings and festivals, as well as accessibility tours for visitors with disabilities.

The Interpretive Programming Intern will report to both the Coordinator and Assistant Director of Interpretive Programming and will assist with a variety of regular and special exhibition programs, with a focus on kids’ Summer ARTventures classes (ages 5-7 and 8-12) and “Cincinnati Summer,” a 10-week programming celebration of the Cincinnati Wing and Eternal Summer: The Art of Edward Henry Potthast.  The intern will also develop and create content for Family Focus Guides and complete a research project tailored to his or her interests in a particular audience or area of museum education.

Requirements: Junior or senior working towards a Bachelor’s degree in art education, studio art, or art history.  This position requires excellent interpersonal skills as the intern will interact with Art Museum visitors of all ages on a regular basis. Strong verbal and written communication skills, creative thinking, a sense of humor, and a passion for sharing art with others also required.  Teaching and/or studio experience is a plus.

Institutional Advancement
Visitor Research Assistant
The Visitor Research Assistant will support in the creation, distribution, and collection of various surveys within the Cincinnati Art Museum. This position will assist with data analysis by entering and coding sets of data, and by properly organizing and archiving survey materials. The Visitor Research Assistant will also be expected to assist with the data management process, report editing, and large research projects.

Requirements: High school graduate, pursuing a postsecondary degree (preferred degree in Sociology, Marketing Research, Public Administration, Museum Studies, or similar research oriented degrees)Applicant should have strong research, writing, and verbal skills and experience in Excel.

Term: Summer 2013
Hours: Minimum of 15 hours/week or 3 days/week. Flexible schedule T-S, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Museum Shop
Position: Museum Shop Intern
Museum Shop Intern will assist in the Buying Office and in The Shop. Work will include all aspects of retail management, merchandising, merchandise procurement and sales.

Requirements: Must be currently enrolled in a college program.
