SUMMARY OF POSITION ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise and maintain studio labs within the Department of Art & Art History.
· Lead the Department’s Health and Safety Program development and implementation. Coordinate and comply with the DA&AH Health and Safety program for all studio areas. Assist in the operational inventory of supplies and equipment related to Health and Safety. Assist all instructors with technical concerns related to Health and Safety. Serve as Registered OSHA Waste Manager for the department.
· Manage safe operation, maintenance and organization of the department’s studio labs' (Ceramics, Sculpture, 2-D and 3-D Foundations, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Time-Based Media).
Supervise and maintain functioning of all equipment and machinery in the areas (including but not limited to: digital printing labs, wood working equipment, electric kilns, enlargers, presses, gas kilns, welding equipment, clay mixers and pugmills, wood shop equipment, fork lift, sandblaster, potters’ wheels, metal working equipment, all power tools and small hand tools); preventative maintenance for all equipment; research ordering and receiving of parts for equipment repairs; receiving and installation of all equipment; inventory organization, maintenance and supervision related equipment check-out. Liaison with appropriate UAB services for work orders. Organize equipment and space for safe, clean orderly and effective use. This includes instructing students in proper cleanup and studio maintenance.
· Assist and instruct students in safe use and proper operation of studio equipment
· Support classroom instruction processes.
· Hiring, orientation and supervision of work-study students.
· Order lab supplies and equipment for department and reimburses faculty for supply purchases.
· Monitor usage and schedule regular maintenance for the departmental van.
· Assist Chair of the Department of Art and Art History as needed with special projects

| Job Description | Supervises and coordinates scheduling and utilization of department laboratories. Provides technical, administrative and logistical instruction and support. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate publications and communication/interaction with subject matter experts. Art Studio background is preferred. The ability to lift up to 50lbs is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of Oracle payment requests and purchase order experience is preferred. |

Museum Curator & Programs Coordinator
This is a full-time position at the Pickens County Museum of Art & History; Pickens, SC
Responsibilities
- Researches, develops, and implements interdisciplinary public programming and events for the Pickens County Museum of Art & History and Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center.
- Secure, maintain and prepare collections and exhibits for the Pickens County Museum of Art & History
- Conduct tours of the Museum and Hagood Mill Historic Site & Folklife Center, as necessary.
- Perform related professional and administrative work as required.
- Catalogs and maintains Museum collections and exhibits, including the old “Gaol” in which the museum is housed and also the historic Hagood Mill site.
- Designs and installs permanent exhibits; researches, writes and prints text for displays.
- Assists Director with scheduling, design and installation of changing exhibits.
- Design, coordination and logistical planning any variety of museum programming.
- Confirmation and scheduling of instructors and schedules for art and culturally based classes in the museum school and Hagood Mill’s Field School programs.
- Photographs and documents events and exhibits.
- Greets visitors and provides information
- Works with the front desk to coordinate and schedule group tours.
- Assists in securing and administering grant funds for special programs and projects; assists in securing loans and donations; maintains related records and prepares related reports.
- Participates in marketing and public relations efforts; makes public presentations to inform the public about the museum / mill site projects and programs.
- Provides high level administrative support to the Director.
- Accepts and prepares forms for donations and loans.
- Performs general administrative / clerical work, as necessary, including but not limited to, preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, processing mail, ordering supplies, etc.
- Other related duties as assigned by the Pickens County Culture Commission Director.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Education and training equivalent to 4 years of college education; and
- Some training in museum studies, exhibit design and archival conservation is desirable.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Access and Excel, as well as, Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop products.
- Public speaking ability
- Must possess a valid SC driver’s license

Adam Savage's Ten Rules for Success

The truly wonderful Adam Savage, co-host of Mythbusters, co-founder of Tested, and BB contributor, closed our Boing Boing: Ingenuity theatrical experience yesterday with an energizing and inspiring talk about why he is a maker. Adam shared ten rules for success that we would all do well to follow:

Really good. Get good at as many things as you can. Being good at one thing makes it easier to get good at other things.2. Getting good at stuff takes practice.
Lots and lots of practice.3. Get OBSESSED.
Everyone at the top of their field is obsessed with what they're doing.4. Doing something well and thoroughly is its OWN reward.5. Show and Tell.
If you do something well and you're happy with it, for FSM's sake, tell EVERYONE.6. If you want something, ASK.
If something piques your interest, tell someone. If you want to learn something, ask someone, like your BOSS. As an employer, I can tell you, people who want to learn new skills are people I want to keep employed.7. Have GOALS.
Make up goals. Set goals. Regularly assess where you are and where you want to be in terms of them. This is a kind of prayer that works, and works well. Allow for the fact that things will NEVER turn out like you think they will, and you must be prepared to end up miles from where you intended.8. Be nice. To EVERYONE.
Life is way too short to be an asshole. If you are an asshole, apologize.9. FAIL.

Landscape: It's much more than a pretty picture, a view through a window, a morning sunrise, or a forested hillside. Today landscape has come full circle to encompass humanity despite our attempts to subdue, reform, resist, and conquer it. We are finally realizing the limits of our sphere and our connection to it. What was once a vast sea of natural form grown in place through millennia has now been largely measured, marked, peeled back, and defined by the human race. Like some tolerant hidden giant bearing the weight of one species, the Earth and the land it spawned us from defines us, yet quietly defies us. Landscape is where we come to terms, discover hope, and take a broader view. Inevitably it is also where we recognize that the limitation of our landscape is also probably our own; it is a critical vista. In honor of all the Earth has given and continues to give, Manifest invites artists, designers, architects, and others to submit works to this competitive juried exhibit which will mark the opening of our 10th season of exhibitions. Manifest is eager to present and document a broadly compelling collection of works featuring Landscape as their common theme, and to discover just how artists address the subject in works of art or design today. This exhibit has no predefined expectation for type, style, or media of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual. The only criteria beyond excellent quality is the theme of Landscape, which can range from small to vast, urban to rural, real or imagined. VISTA will be the only exhibit featured in the galleries to open Manifest's 10th season!
